Day 20: San Fransisco- Dim Sum Sunday

After a day of exploring Wine Country we headed back into the city to explore some more of San Fran! Ben and Renne’s friend Roxy joined us for the day and we all started it with some Malibu Bloody Mary’s that we picked up when we were in The Bu.

They were spicy and the prefect start to our Sunday of exploring! We all hopped into Roxy’s car and went to explore the Farmer’s Market and Harbour area of Oakland before hopping on the ferry to the city. Now this was a windy little affair and of course Bobo got very cold and stole all of our jumpers, well just mine. We had amazing views and the fog decided to disappear and we were blessed with a beautiful San Fran day.

We had lunch reservations at Yank Sing in the Rincon Center (note American spelling there). We ate so much! Worries that veggie options might be limited were soon blown out of the water and we all feasted on delicious red cabbage salads, spinach dumplings and sesame seed balls. The food came around on trollies and it was the perfect food to keep our energy levels high for what was to come next- The Exploritorium.

Now this is a museum unlike anything to that I have ever been to before. Imagine if the Natural History and Science Museums had a love child. This love child then goes on to live a life of sugar highs and butterflies then this is what the Exploratorium is. The main idea is that everything is there for you to explore. We liked this. We liked this a lot. See we like to press buttons and maybe even push small children out of the way in order to try things out first….teaching valuable life lessons everywhere we go.

So we push, we pull, we turn, we snap, we explore. There was a cool exhibition about the Theo Jansen’s Strandbeests and we even got to give them ago which was pretty cool. The beasts came from him dedicating a year of his life to the tubes. This has inspired us to do the same. We just need to find some tubes. Blowen (Blunt and Bowen) favourite’s were writing our names with our iPhone light on walls (can’t escape the technology) realising how awful we would look if our faces were perfectly symmetrical, drinking water from a toilet and building a tower that refused to stand up. We ran around like small children and felt thoroughly exhausted and our minds overstimulated by the time it was to leave. If only we had the chance to go in the tactile dome…what was in it, we will never ever know!

Exploring done we all headed to the Ferry Building to look at cookbooks (my favourite activity of all time), ogling mushrooms at Farwest Funghi and Emma not being able to buy the life changing grapefruit spoon as we were about to miss our ferry. We made it onto the ferry and managed to get some gorgeous views of San Fran as we left it glistening in the still beautiful sunshine behind us. Bobo managed to fall asleep on the trip so missed the whale as it jumped over our heads. It was pretty spectacular.

We arrived back in Oakland and enjoyed some wine in the garden before having a chilled night of cheese and card playing. We had a fairly early night as we had yet more exploring to do and a long journey to the Sierra Mountains in the morning.

Ps..I of course won all of the cards. Well I did and Ben did. Emma not so much!
