We have had really busy, action packed days so far and after the horrors of the Mexican experience last night we decided to treat ourselves to a lie in and a more chilled day. So don’t expect the same sprawling beast of a blog post that you are used to reading….you may very well be cheering…loudly.
We got out of bed and found a local place to have brunch. God we love brunch and by midday we were at The Getty to get our art on!
So we boarded the tram to take us to The Getty and discovered, much to my delight, that there is a Robert Maplethorpe exhibition going on. I love this man. We sign up for the tour and quickly realise that our guide is no Jeremiah Poope and we ditch it pretty quick…You’re leading the bloody tour. You do the talking. And as for the annoying women who clearly can’t keep quiet with the questions…You can bog right off too!
So we explore the exhibition solo..mavericks…and both really love it. It is the highlight of the whole place! Particular highlights were the ‘X’ collection of photographs, and being inspired to recreate our own. Not of the X collection. That is all about S & M. Definitely not the X collection!
We then wandered around the rest of the place and I can’t quite say that it was my type of art! I’m just not a fan of looking at men stood in fields with their hoes, or busts that don’t have any eye detail. It creeps me out!
We pop outside to check out the cactus garden and the rest of the grounds and realised that the sky was looking a tad apocalyptic from the fire that Bowen has been closely following. It had made LA, that is supposed to be in the middle of a heatwave, actually seem colder!!! We later found out that a wild animal sanctuary had to be evacuated. Poor little lion cubs! Even as I type this on day 7 of the trip it is still spreading!
We then walked through the central garden which has a water feature…we also love water features and here we posed for recreations of Robert Maplethorpe photography. I was pretty firm in my belief that I was the better photographer but having reviewed the photos I will give Bowen the victory. Damn you Bowen.
We then hopped on board the train and sped away from the Getty to make it back to Hollywood in time as we had tickets to go see Cabaret at the Pantages theatre that is literally opposite our hotel. We made a quick stop at Trader Joes to pick up some supper and settled for wraps and soup in bed. Man we know how to live. LA party scene right here!
Of course no trip outside of the hotel would be complete without a CVS pharmacy visit and we thought that it would be a good idea to smuggle some M&Ms in to the theatre to avoid their hefty prices. Of course we selected the 2 giant bags for the $6 deal, that we didn’t actually qualify for, but purchased them anyway and smuggled them into Bowen’s bag.
We get to the theatre and have our bags searched. I go into a different queue and turn around to see Bowen in a spot of bother in hers. I go over to help the girl out and discover that the bitch of an attendant is refusing to allow the M&Ms in because they are too big. Say what? We tried to argue that they were for our road trip to San Diego tomorrow but it didn’t work. These people piss me right off. She had this fake smile slapped on her face and man I wanted to remove it, but I bruise like a peach and avoid physical contact at all costs so we handed over the M&Ms…you have no idea how much Bowen has been craving M&Ms. I bet the greedy bitch took them home and held an M&M party.
The play was great. No Lisa Minnelli but great. Bowen had a spectacular view as she sat behind a literal giant, which would have been made better had she had some M&MS.
We crawled back into bed on our last night in Los Angeles throughly exhausted from all of the exploring. LA is really not what I had imagined it to be at all. Lots of people say that they hate the place, I can see why, as parts of it are ugly, run down and a little scary but the traffic wasn’t as crazy as I expected it to be, there are some really lovely areas and we have had 5 really great days here.
Tomorrow we head to San Diego. We were due to be going to Palm Springs but changed our plan as it is currently 45 degrees in Palm Springs and that is a little too hot, even for me!
Bring it on San Diego, we are coming!
