The Pursuit of Happiness is a monthly series that documents my journey to becoming a more fulfilled, successful and happier person.
I promised myself that I wouldn’t start these with confused exclamations about how quickly the months are passing BUT how is it March already? I’m sat at my desk and thinking about the last month has been. I have always found it strange how so much can change in 29 days and yet how much can stay exactly the same.
Huge change has not been a thing this month. Instead things have just ticked along. Days have melted into one another and it has been fine. But that’s just it. Fine isn’t fantastic is it? The biggest thing to happen was when I gave myself concussion…it’s a long story and then this concussion became a virus and a cough that is still lingering almost two weeks later. The illness occurred just as I had a week off. Isn’t that always the way? I Working in a boarding school can be so rewarding but also really tough as you devote so much of your time to looking after other people’s children. Time off is very precious and losing it to an illness is draining. I had so many plans and only achieved a handful of them.
I did however tick off a massive item on my bucket list and visited the Harry Potter Studios was insanely perfect and it really was as if you were entering the wizarding world. I ran around, squealed and may have shed a tear or two. If you haven’t been, book tickets immediately.
I have felt happy this month but am defiently craving adventure and I still want to explore new places and to burst out of this routine that I have found myself in. I booked a holiday for April but I don’t want to wait till then to inject some adventure into my life and I hope that my goals for March reflect this.
I refuse to live a life that is dictated by routine and monotony. I will do everything that I can to change it. Some people find comfort in routine. I find it suffocating.
Looking back at February’s Goals
Explore and visit three new places this month
I have mixed feelings about this goal. It was the one that I was most excited and motivated for and I had devoted half term to achieving it. I managed to explore one new place and then I got struck down with a crippling illness that left me in bed for the rest of the week. The one place I visited was epic though- The Harry Potter Studios (as mentioned above), just outside of London. I took my 12 year old sister as she was the only human that I could guarantee who would be just as excited as I was. It was the perfect day and I will be dedicating a whole blog post to it soon. I think that I will set myself this goal again for the month of March as I do still have exactly the same enthusiasm for it. I just love to go to new places.
Reach out to old friends
I managed to stick to this one a little better than the one above! I caught up with two old friends this month and had such a wonderful time with both of them that this goal is the highlight of my February.
I went to visit my old colleague and friend Katy and visited her new house, which is just lovely. I went over for breakfast but didn’t end up leaving until the late afternoon. We caught up, gossiped and shared stories and I cant wait to see her again soon.
I also invited my best friend from University, Louise, to come stay with me for the weekend at the start of half term. We went for a beautiful pub lunch and shared a cheeseboard, drank too much, went dancing and got chips form the kebab van! It was great to catch up with her too and we were idiots, just like we were during the three years that we lived together.
During February I also wrote a post about friendship and popularity and these two girls are such wonderful friends who have been given me so much support. I am so lucky to have them in my life.
To pay off one credit card
I did it and am so proud of myself! There is nothing as sweet as the feeling that comes with paying off old debts. I did it slowly but like the tortoise I won the race… Now to pay off the second one!
Looking to March
Explore and visit three new places this month
This is going to be at the top of my list again this month as I was so upset that my sickness stopped me from doing it this month. I want to visit new places both big and small. I already have so many ideas of places that I want to go to and one of them maybe the seaside. Super excited!!
Stick to a blogging schedule
I adore blogging and now that I have changed up the content of the blog recently (read about that here) I feel more determined than ever to keep going with it. However, it is also something that I struggle to find time to keep doing regularly. I want to make more time to do it this month. I have printed off some planning tools to try and help me and I’m not aiming to post every day. Just two to three times a week to start with. They say it takes 30 days to make a habit. Let’s see if it works!
To run 3k
This may sound like a pretty pathetic distance but to set myself anything higher would be foolish. I have just got back into running and it started out a few minutes but I have been (very slowly) been upping the distances that I can now run. I want to be able to run 5k by the Summer holidays. Just like blogging I have set up a running schedule too. A recent order from the mid season Sweaty Betty sale may also spur me on slightly.
I hope that your February has been fantastic and I wish you an even better March. Promise me that you will put your own happiness at the centre of your world’s this month. And please do make sure that you let me know how that goes.
